  11. Fellow IBM 3380-K dasd users:
  12.    We at FDA's Parklawn Computer Center "PCC" are about to under take what
  13. has been called a dangerous endevor, the physical relocation of 3380-K
  14. disk units. The danger I have been told is not the damage that can occur to
  15. the electronics as we are ONLY moving them approx 75-100 feet but that IBM
  16. USED to say that and movement over and inch or two could results in a
  17. head crash. They used to recommend a backup before relocation and and
  18. restore afterwards. We at PCC most definitly plan to protect ourselfs by
  19. doing the necessary FDR backups.... but NOW IBM says don't worry about it
  20. we can NOW move these disks without any problems and just reconnect and
  21. power them up and continue processing with zero problems...
  22. We will be staying in our computer area on the sub-floor but also we DO NOT
  23. have the new carpeted sub-flooring. We have checked and re-checked with IBM
  24. and we get the same answer, THEY WILL STRAP THE UNITS DOWN AND MOVE THEM
  25. WITH ZERO PROBLEMS. In most cases we would just copy the volume to another
  26. unit and NOT worry.... BUT the 2 banks involved are our system packs....
  27. JES SPOOLS, CATALOG VOLUMES, IPL PACKS and critical LIBRARY and DATABASE
  28. volumes, plus others.... or the worst possible mix... that could
  29. totally kill all three MVS/ESA Main frames and several national networks.
  30. We DO have the Innovation SAR product to bail us out if both banks of dasd
  31. go down the tubes but my question to this lists diverse sub-scribers is this,
  32. has ANYONE DONE THIS SUCCESSFULLY and is the folks at BIG BLUE nolonger
  33. skiddish about moving their dasd farms.
