-
- I have a training manual from another vendor which addresses some of
- these questions. Their manual says that the cartridge should be at
- least 165 meters long including 3 "overhead" sections. The leader
- before the BOT has a max length of 1.34m and it is included in a
- larger section which is 3.28m minimum length and also includes the
- density ID mark. After the EOT is a 4.3m minimum length. Thus the
- data portion is 165 - 3.28 - 4.3 = 157.42m

-
- The lengths given are expressed as nominal lengths, and are:
- IBG of 2mm, Tape Mark of 1mm, and Erase Gap of 7.8mm. The diagrams
- in the manual do not show Erase Gaps as features of fully written
- tapes, but then I find the manual a bit confusing. At the least a
- TM is IBG + TM + IBG (or 5mm). I believe that is about .4 inches.

- >the amount of tape wasted in IBGs?)
-
- Yes. IDRC combines two techniques to compress the data. First the
- data is broken into 512 byte chunks which are compressed in an
- encode process using Run Length Coding and Binary Arithmetic Coding.
- Then the encoded blocks are assembled into a packet and the packet
- is combined with other packets (number unspecified) so as to
- eliminate IBGs.
