- We recently went from VM/SP R6 to VM/ESA 370 feature. I can tell you this:
-
- SFS is available in both versions of VM in a nearly identical form,
- except that it runs, in my subjective opinion, better under VM/ESA
- 370 feature than under VM/SP R6.
-
- I would like to warn you that SFS offers an incredibly bad method for
- backing up SFS directories. You basically have to backup the entire
- filepool (and not just allocated space - ALL space). There is no
- file-level or directory level backup provided. In other words, if you
- define a 1 Gigabyte filepool, and want to back it up (as all good
- boy scouts do!) then be prepared to back 1 Gigabyte of data up to tape.
-
- A between release APAR adds the ability to restore individual files
- from your 1 gigabyte tape backup.
-
- DFSMS Version 2(?) enhances SFS backup and restore significantly, but
- is not available for the 370 feature of VM/ESA. (This I learned during
- IBM's VM DAY presentation here in Denver).
-
- To make any real use of SFS, be prepared to develop your own backup and
- restore procedures.
