- At Cal Poly we have about 90 modems accessible by a single phone
- number. Students, faculty, and staff, as well as anybody else is
- able to easily get the number and dial in. The only resources on
- the network that don't require an account and password on a host
- are the Library system and a telnet socket to our CWIS (cpnn).
- We give accounts only to elegible students, faculty and staff.
- Non campus people may apply for an account on our AIX system, but
- they must be a K-12 educator, retired faculty living in the area,
- or have good story that is sufficient to get my signature on
- their application form, and the Vice-President's signature.

- We have Pac Bell do a busy study of our modem lines 3-4 times a
- year to get an idea of how many times all modems are in use and
- users are denied access. This seldom happens since we added the
- last 10 modems, but we expect growth to force the issue of
- whether to buy more soon. We are experimenting with ISDN
- from private homes, so that the users pay Pac Bell the costs of
- data connectivity at home. There are a lot of issues to be
- explored there, however.

- We do have a few other modems for staff to get access to the
- systems they have some responsibility for from home. These are
- generally 9600 baud modems and the numbers are very private.
- We also have a couple of 9600 baud modems for faculty access, but
- we don't freely advertise the numbers.
