I was under the impression that the various sound modes only affect the amount of delay (no special effects). The echo sound that you are getting is supposed to be there, however the tinny sound isn't. Usually I get unwanted highs (in the form of hissy noise) as a result of the bucket brigade introducing unwanted harmonics (inherent in the sampling of the bucket brigade). To remove the harmonics, I've adjusted the common mode signal rejection circuit and reduced the bandwidth of the output filters.
Would you mind checking your circuit and letting me know if you find that your rear set of signals are fed from the same source? My rear speakers are both fed from the same point except that one of the speakers is phased 180 degrees from the other. So in reality the rear speakers are monophonic with phasing to give the illusion of separation.
