  15. This is kind of difficult, since both an incoming modem and an incoming
  16. human typically will wait for your end to say something.  The modem won't
  17. say anything until it gets a tone it recognizes as a suitable form of
  18. carrier.  The human will probably eventually say "hello?" :-).
