  13. We in Theodore Roosevelt Council recently got a new head to our Council
  14. Camping Committee. He is a "ball of fire" and looking to energize our 
  15. camping program. I have been a Scoutmaster and not active in council affairs.
  16. From this viewpoint as a "user" of the camps, it appears that under previous
  17. leadership, the camping committee focused on delivering the traditional
  18. summer camp experience, and supporting the facility for that program.
  19. Now, I have been drafted into the Council camping committee to head up
  20. the "Taskmaster Corp". I would appreciate any input on how this has been
  21. made to work in other councils.

  23. I am told that years ago, alot of camp upkeep and development was
  24. done with volunteer labor from adult Scouters and friends. Development
  25. became somewhat low quality and completion dates where unpredictable. So,
  26. we have been using paid contractors for most development projects.

  28. At the same time, our council camping program has been limited in scope.
  29. We have had Scout Camp, Webelos Weekend, JLT, etc. But, we have had little
  30. or nothing for older Scouts, little  high adventure, ...
  31.  
  32. The goal now is to reverse this trend. If we can improve our camp facilities
  33. through more volunteerism and liberate more money to be used for more
  34. camping programs (especially older boy programs), then it is a win for 
  35. everyone.

  37. We think we will have a Corp of Scouters and friends that are skilled tradesmen
  38. who can do projects that require serious equipment and skills. We think
  39. we will also have a Corp of Scouters and friends that are normal homeowner
  40. types who can do simpler projects or be crew members under a tradesman.

  42. Has this worked in your council? How well? How did you recruit Corp members?
  43. What pitfalls did you hit?
