- I read the following article in last Sunday's paper. This is
- an AP story (printed w/o permission):
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
- Some tests have shown that a great deal of an engine's
- wear and tear occurs in the first few seconds of being started,
- mainly because oil hasn't had a chance to coat parts before
- they kick into full operation.
- Decision Makers of Newton, Mass., says it has a solution.
- It's called the "Safety Start" device and works like this:
- When the key is turned, the device delays gasoline and
- spark for five seconds, allowing oil to begin circulating.
- The company says the device also has a temperature sensor
- which shuts it down when the engine is warm and oil recently has
- been circulated.
- Decision Makers president I. L. Schwarz says it can be
- installed by an owner and costs less than $75.
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- I haven't contacted Decision Makers, so I don't know for
- certain how it works. It sounded like a great idea at first, but
- I wonder if for those first five seconds the starter motor just
- grinds away to circulate the oil? Then again, I suppose that a
- new starter each year is a small price to pay iff the engine lasts
- another (couple of) 100,000 miles.
