- An old invention has resurfaced in the news recently. A professor at
- the Australian National University developed an electromagnetic separator
- for fuel about 30 years ago. It wasn`t very successful then. Supposedly
- the fuel is a bit different know (I think they`re talking about unleaded)
- and it works quite well.
-
- The device fits inbetween the carburettor and the inlet manifold. Supposedly
- it uses electromagnetic forces to break the fuel droplets down to an average
- size of 3 mircons. That constrasts with 10 microns for the Orbital Engine
- and around 100(?) microns for fuel injection systems. This then leads to
- better combustion. Current tests indicate 40% emissions reduction, 40%
- less fuel consumption and about 1% loss of maximum power.
-
- The inventor is currently testing it on his 2.6l 4cyl Mitsubishi Magna (Sigma)
- and claims 50% less fuel consumption.
