- Okay, how about this for a definition?
-
- "Speculative Fiction is a group of genres of fiction where one or more of the
- key problems to be faced by one or more of the protagonists only exists because
- one or more elements of the physical universe, metaphysical universe or the
- culture dipicted in the story do not exist today and could not existed in the
- past."
-
- Genres:
-
- Science Fiction
- Speculative fiction which speculates in the area of physical universe and
- culture, within plausible limits (limits which are purely a matter of personal
- dogma).
-
- Fantasy
- Speculative Fiction which speculates in the area of metaphysics, as well as
- anything that would otherwise qualify as Science Fiction, if it were plausible.
-
-
- Some of the Sub-Genres:
-
- Hard Science Fiction
- Science Fiction in which the primary problem develops from an element of
- speculation about the physical universe.
-
- Soft Science Fiction
- Science Fiction in which the primary problem develops from an element of
- speculation about culture and social forces.
-
- Supernatural Horror
- Subgenre of Fantasy, mainly characterized by the appearance of a mysterious and
- destructive force in a contemporary setting.
-
- Scientific Horror ( e.g. any Michael Crichton novel )
- Subgenre of Science Fiction, mainly characterized by the appearance of a
- mysterious and destructive force in a contemporary setting. (see any
- similarities?)
-
- Of course, very few novels classify solely in one category. Even the best
- known Hard SF writers like to include metaphysical elements. Niven has psionic
- powers and luck, Clarke has his monolith, and Heinlein said the universe was
- one big story and he wrote it.
-
-
- BJ>Just about all the supposed hard saifai I've seen contains glaring
- impossibilities.
-
- Could be you just draw the line between implausibility and plausibility sooner
- than most people, or may maybe you're reading the Lenseman series. :)
