  22. NO!!!  (And that will cost you $0:-)  The stuff they're trying to
  23. sell you will not help any more than a regular waxing, and it may
  24. actually do harm--clearcoat is actually slightly porous (to air),
  25. and their snake oil may trap moisture underneath, causing it to bubble
  26. or peel.  I know what you're thinking: "Why would they sell me
  27. something that could ruin my car?"  Answer: So you'll have to buy
  28. another car.

  33. It probably is nonsense--especially if they're not going to drill any
  34. holes.  All well-made cars today have ample rustproofing from the
  35. factory.  If you want to get one of those full-scale jobs which does
  36. drill holes and squirt into everywhere, (1) the holes may cause the
  37. very rust you are trying to avoid, and (2) the gunk often clogs up
  38. drainage holes which the manufacturer put there (e.g., in the doors),
  39. again defeating the purpose.  Your dealer would probably not be
  40. selling you that kind of service anyway, since it would cost him
  41. more than $10 in materials and labor.  (They tend to sell this "service"
  42. for about $100-200, claiming that this is a bargain, which it would be
  43. if you were getting real rustproofing, and usually put the pressure
  44. to you by saying it's a one-shot special deal at the time of sale
  45. only.)

  47. Somebody in this newsgroup or rec.autos recommended that the best
  48. way to prevent rust is to get an annual spray of oil on the underbody.
  49. If anybody knows of places to have that done, I'd like to know--with
  50. a summer that's felt like fall, winter in Chicago this year threatens
  51. to be brutal.

  57. For the color: Spend that money instead on a good radar detector
  58. (Cincinnati Microwave products always solicit great testimonials;
  59. I myself have had good luck with a BEL Express 3)--you're going
  60. to need it, dude.
