- Congratulations! The car has received pretty good reviews.

-
- NO!!! (And that will cost you $0:-) The stuff they're trying to
- sell you will not help any more than a regular waxing, and it may
- actually do harm--clearcoat is actually slightly porous (to air),
- and their snake oil may trap moisture underneath, causing it to bubble
- or peel. I know what you're thinking: "Why would they sell me
- something that could ruin my car?" Answer: So you'll have to buy
- another car.

-
- It probably is nonsense--especially if they're not going to drill any
- holes. All well-made cars today have ample rustproofing from the
- factory. If you want to get one of those full-scale jobs which does
- drill holes and squirt into everywhere, (1) the holes may cause the
- very rust you are trying to avoid, and (2) the gunk often clogs up
- drainage holes which the manufacturer put there (e.g., in the doors),
- again defeating the purpose. Your dealer would probably not be
- selling you that kind of service anyway, since it would cost him
- more than $10 in materials and labor. (They tend to sell this "service"
- for about $100-200, claiming that this is a bargain, which it would be
- if you were getting real rustproofing, and usually put the pressure
- to you by saying it's a one-shot special deal at the time of sale
- only.)
-
- Somebody in this newsgroup or rec.autos recommended that the best
- way to prevent rust is to get an annual spray of oil on the underbody.
- If anybody knows of places to have that done, I'd like to know--with
- a summer that's felt like fall, winter in Chicago this year threatens
- to be brutal.

- For the "paint protection" and "rustproofing": Just say "No!"
- For the color: Spend that money instead on a good radar detector
- (Cincinnati Microwave products always solicit great testimonials;
- I myself have had good luck with a BEL Express 3)--you're going
- to need it, dude.
