- SRI LANKA
- A bomb explosion on a crowded bus in northeast Sri Lanka has
- killed seven passengers and seriously wounded 40 others. A military
- spokesman in Colombo says the privately owned bus was about to take
- off from the port of Trincomalee when the bomb exploded inside the
- vehicle, damaging several other buses parked nearby.

- The military has blamed the Tamil separatist group, the Liberation
- Tigers of Tamil Eelam, but there has been no statement from the

- CHINA
- A special telephone service has been set up in China, to help
- women suffering from psychological problems.

- The People's Daily said it was the first service of its kind and
- women feeling nervous, harassed, confused or depressed can simply
- dial a number in Beijing for free advice and support. Thirty-two
- volunteers, all women over 35, were chosen to answer the calls
- after a rigorous selection process that took two months.

- The AFP news agency notes that under China's constitution, the
- country's 600 million women are equal to men in the eyes of the
- laws, but nevertheless face stark inequalities.

- It quotes the latest issues of the monthly magazine China Today as
- saying that at least 70% of the urban unemployed are women, and of
- the country's 180 million illiterates, 70% are women. (R. Australia
