- NEWS RELEASE
- September 2, 1992 Contact: Joe Volk 202/547-6000
-
- re: F-16 and F-15 U.S. Weapons Sales
-
-
- Washington, DC:
-
- The Friends Committee on National Legislation announced its
- opposition to the proposed U.S. sales of F-16 fighter planes
- to Taiwan and of F-15 aircraft to Saudi Arabia.
-
- "False promises. President Bush and Governor Clinton are
- trading false promises of U.S. job security for human life when
- they advocate these advanced fighter weapons sales," asserted Joe
- Volk, executive secretary of the Quaker lobby group.
-
- "Strong U.S. initiatives for peace conversion at home and
- conventional arms control abroad hold real promise for U.S. jobs,
- and for protecting democracy and saving lives abroad," said Volk,
- who chairs an arms transfers lobby group of about 30 religious,
- scientific, and arms control organizations.
-
- The FCNL, established by the Religious Society of Friends in
- 1943, said that the U.S. government is pursuing a dangerous
- policy to prop up failing military industries by promoting export
- sales of advanced conventional weapons. Two dangers are
- especially apparent. First, these U.S. sales rachet up regional
- conventional arms races, which may escalate out of control,
- putting U.S. military personnel at risk of deployment to combat.
- Second, scarce resources for economic development are diverted to
- arms races, creating vicious cycles of violent conflict, refugees,
- and hunger. "It all adds up to bad policy, and Congress should
- stop these sales before more harm is done," said Volk.
