- Title: UNITED NATIONS: BOUTROS GHALI CONCERNED OVER EL SALVADOR
-
- new york, aug 20 (ips) -- un secretary-general boutros boutros
- ghali thursday expressed concern in the un security council over
- the slow pace of the peace process in el salvador.
-
- boutros ghali said that deadlines for the demobilization of
- army troops and farabundo marti national liberation front (fmln)
- guerrillas, part of a peace plan agreed on in january, were not
- being met.
-
- however, he said the situation was not alarming and that,
- while things were moving slowly, there were signs of progress on
- the political front.
-
- botros-ghali included the salvadorean issue in the 12-point
- agenda of a special meeting of the council, which also discussed
- the situation in afghanistan, cambodia, iraq, mozambique,
- somalia, south africa and western sahara.
-
- diplomatic sources said the secretary-general pinpointed the
- delay in the establishment of a national civilian police academy
- in el salvador. the new unit would absorb the country's security
- forces and the fmln's guerrillas.
-
- u.s., british and french representatives are scheduled to meet
- soon with the united nations' deputy secretary-general for
- political affairs, marrack goulding, to discuss the situation in
- el salvador.
-
- goulding has just completed a visit to the central american
- country, where he studied the progress of the peace plan
- , contained in a jan. 16 agreement between the salvadorean state
- and the fmln.
-
- the accord ended a civil war that lasted almost 12 years.
