- As reported, the attack against the refugee home in Rostock reached
- its worst point Monday night, as the crowd of 900, mostly young people
- stormed the 'home' and set fire to the lower floors.
- Yesterday I saw a TV report made from inside the building as it was burning.
- The police and fire fighters watched on a few hundred meters away as
- the racist crowd set fire to the building where 150 Vietnamese refugees,
- a few supporters and a camara team were trapped. Those inside tried to
- call the police emergency line and the fire department 20, 30 times,
- but either the line was disconected, bussy, or the people on the other end
- weren't convinced of the seriousness of the matter. As the racists
- made their way up the building, floor by floor setting fires, the people
- trapped on the top floor tried desperately to get to the roof, which
- was blocked by a steel door. Then the power went out. Eventually
- they made it onto the roof and into the next building where some, but
- not all the residents opened their doors and let the people in.
- Basically this happens every week in the united Germany, but not
- so extreme. Also this time there was a camera team from national
- telivision, who went through the same fear as the refugees, not
- knowing if the police would come, if they would be burned alive.
- In this case the whole nation has seen what these refugees have gone
- through and have seen the ineptitude of the police and local politicians.
- Faced by such an extreme case of racism, the government will
- have to respond. But we can't let the government off the hook. They
- are partly responsible with their attempts to limit the asylum right,
- with their demonizing of refugees.
-
- The anti-fascist movement in germany was quick to respond. Most of the
- news has not yet reached me, but I know that there was a demo in
- Frankfurt on Monday with 150 people and on tuesday with more people.
- Also on tuesday there was a demo in Weimar with 100 people. Like I
- wrote in the last posting there was a demo in Bonn with 150
- autonomists resulting in several broken windows. I have also
- heard of a demo in Rostock already. Also in Rostock a bar
- frequented by right wing skin-heads was burnt down.
- Today there is another demo in Weimar and tomorrow in Erfurt. On Saturday
- there is a nation-wide demo in Rostock. If you can't come in person
- think of solidarity actions you can organize where you live.
- If you need more info, write me and I'll try to get it to you.
