- A large number of users use GNU Emacs on a platform not officially supported
- by FSF. That is, someone else did the port to get it to work. Apollo and HP
- workstation ports, the MS-DOS port (Demacs), and the OS/2 port are several
- that come to mind.
-
- When a bug occurs in these ports, the user must struggle with the question:
- Whose problem is it?
-
- Another example of a problem is one I had recently with the Emacs mail
- command. I would send the message from within Emacs and Emacs reported that
- the message was sent. But sometimes the message was NOT sent. If I went to a
- another window on my workstation and sent mail via Unix mail, it was delivered
- without a problem. So, it sure looked like Emacs was acting up. But I was
- not confortable reporting a bug against Emacs, because I could not be sure it
- was a bug in Emacs.
-
- Several weeks later, we discovered the cause. I invoked the shell command
- from with Emacs and then displayed my environment. At the end of the list of
- environment variables a portion of my Korn shell alias list was shown to be in
- the environment. Somehow my environment variable space got corrupted.
-
- Then I remembered. Just before my Emacs mail problems occured, I had learned
- about the ability to export an alias in the Korn shell. So I had modified my
- .kshrc file to export each alias. When I changed this back to not exporting
- each alias, my corrupted environment and Emacs mail problems went away. So,
- it appears that there is a bug in the exporting of variables in the Korn
- shell. Or is it a bug in the Apollo port of the Korn shell to Apollo
- workstations? Or is it a bug in the version of Domain O/S upon which the Korn
- shell executes?
-
- So, it is easy to say that one encountered a bug when running GNU Emacs. It
- is quite another thing to say that the bug is a problem with GNU Emacs as it
- is distributed by the FSF.
-
- Does the FSF care about bugs manifested in GNU Emacs ports that they do not
- officially support?
