- Thanks for the responses. It seems everybody says "use ange-ftp".
- I've got it now and my friendly sysop is installing it as we speak.
-
- It looks great even picks up the .netrc file so I don't need to
- keep logging into stuff (if I can convince the admin to let me
- leave passwords lying around).
-
- It's not quite the whole answer though. It seems (and I haven't
- read the info pages yet) that it's going to be difficult to start
- up a shell and run applications in it. Hard to get compile to
- work. Hard to tell where it's going to compile (which is pretty
- important 'cos the network is heterogenous).
-
- I know WIBNI is the curse of all successful application writer's.
-
- But wouldn't it be nice if: emacs19 had an extension that allowed
- a process to be run on a remote host that fed the emacs-frontend
- with the stuff to put on the screen through a Unix stream (or is
- it a socket?). Local files can then be processed locally and
- everything is transparent except for the baz:s indicating where
- something is going on or am I being naive again!
-
- BTW - despite this I think that gemacs is the best thing since
- sliced bread and I don't see what's so great about X. Please don't
- flame me...
