- We are using a DECstation 3100 with 24MB as our campus news server
- (nntp & c-news). We have 9 sites we exchange news with and have
- 16 nntpds now (Sat morning) and typically around 80 during week days
- and evenings, peaking well above 100. It performs pretty good for
- reading news although posting can be a little slow during peak times.
- IMHO, CPU power is not as important as having fast seeking disks
- and enough memory (plenty dedicated to bufcache). We are considering
- going to a 5000/25 (the 3100 is maxed at 24MB, plus the extra CPU
- can't hurt). Not all sites are big enough to justify having a
- dedicated news server, but I think it's a big win if you can do it.
