- Can you say that with assurance?
-
- Many of the best and most useful replies I have had to postings have
- come via electronic mail, from people at Dell, ESIX, and Microport, as
- well as SCO. There are a few who are a bit shy of the public limelight
- (and I wouldn't blame them after that nightmare Dell was put through
- recently), and prefer to deal through private e-mail.
-
- SCO and ESIX also have their own mailing lists, somewhat removed from
- the "my UNIX is better, nyah nyah" replies that all-too-often follow
- trouble reports in this group. They're more, um, hospitable places in
- which to solve real problems, and they're certainly monitored by tech
- support people at the respective vendors.
-
- Can you really measure someone's presence, that is, their *useful*
- contribution to the net, merely based upon the number of postings?
- I would say not, and that applies to *any* newsgroup.
-
- Some of my best insight into the workings of some of these companies has
- come through private conversations (Hi, Dion!), though sometimes public
- postings are helpful to get the ball rolling.
