- Austin, 1989:
- We spent days mapping out every damn bit and semantic of SYS V and BSD
- line disciplines. There were several things that did NOT map 1:1 in
- BOTH directions (don't bother asking for an example...I don't have time
- to sift through 1989's mail). Instead of doing a half-baked combined
- discipline, we opted for "pure" disciplines. About 4 weeks before we
- shipped AIX 3.1, a guy from Palo Alto snuck some BSD semantics in the
- posix discipline while I was letting him work on SLIP. I think the
- sentiment today is to go ahead and do our "best" BSD imitation inside of
- posix. CBREAK is broken, tandem doesn't exist...the list is long and
- nobody has scheduled time to beef up posix. Too bad.
-
- I wonder what would happen if AIX tty changed directions and became
- based on a "real" STREAMS model but did NOT have any BSD line discipline
- support. Maybe this is what IBM's Mark Brown was hinting at (I'm not a
- betting man).
