- Hi. I have a thin-net backbone. On one end are a half-dozen UNIX
- workstations. On the other end is a dozen PCs running NOVELL. In
- between is a VAXstation running VMS/DECNET/PATHWORKS, and FUSION's
- TCP/IP. Both the workstation group and the PC group need to access
- the VMS system.
-
- So I plugged the two backbones together and it worked dandy. My
- TCP packets go screaming down the line, ignored by the PCs, their
- NOVELL packets go screaming past us, ignored by our workstations.
- And we can both talk to the VAXstation.
-
- But...Lately, the workstations have been having trouble with NFS.
- The serving station says "le0: Carrier loss, transiever cable
- trouble?" or some such...
-
- Problem goes away when I terminate the network between PC group
- and Workstation group.
-
- So, I have a Cabletron Systems repeater with LANVIEW (a bunch of
- LEDS) on my shelf. I hook it up and the "receive" light stays on
- except for an occasional flicker on the PC side. The "receive"
- light stays off except for occasional blinks on the workstation
- side.
-
- So. Is the PC side just soooo busy that I will have to use
- a filtering bridge to keep these networks together? Or do I
- need a router? What's the difference? I read "A network bridge
- is another term for a router". Boy am I confused! Or might there
- be a short between the PC and Workstation side. PC group has
- experienced no difficulty lately, so I doubt a short.
-
- Email or post. I will summarize. Thanks!
-
- -Rick.
