  19. I. Idealistic Studies
  20.  
  21. Idealistic Studies is a journal of philosophy that is entering
  22. its twenty-third year of publication. Since its inception,
  23. articles published have focussed on idealist themes in many areas
  24. of philosophy. One of the important tasks of each generation of
  25. philosophers is to recast and interpret the perennial questions
  26. of philosophy in terms of the idioms of their time. Among the
  27. most important idioms of our time is science. Thus, we want to
  28. expand the scope of Idealistic Studies to include idealist and
  29. nonidealist issues in contemporary science in addition to the
  30. topics we have traditionally covered. In addition to the claims
  31. made by researchers in artificial intelligence, interesting
  32. philosophical problems surface in such diverse areas as
  33. theoretical biology, systems theory, quantum mechanics, and
  34. computing theory. The role of mind in nature and science, the
  35. resurgence of the notion of self-organizing systems, the
  36. appearance of chaos in both classical and quantum dynamics, and
  37. the advent of virtual realities sustained by digital computers:
  38. these and other issues have emerged in just the last thirty
  39. years. We hope to attract philosophers with interests in science
  40. and scientists with interests in philosophy to reflect on these
  41. developments. Idealistic Studies publishes thrice yearly, and the
  42. new format includes reserving the first issue of each year for a
  43. special topic.

  46. II. Topics For the Special Issue of 1993
  47.  
  48. The premier issue of the new journal will focus on the topic:
  49. Computers and Philosophy. We construe this subject very broadly.
  50. Papers may engage, but are not limited to, such topics as:
  51.  
  52. * the uses of computers in teaching and doing philosophy, 
  53. * the role, if any, of "expert systems" in philosophy: the 
  54.   plausibility of algorithms for deciding moral situations 
  55. * the role of computers in visualizing and even creating new      
  56.   problems and proofs in science and mathematics, 
  57. * the role of the computer in the humanities, 
  58. * the status of the debate on artificial intelligence,      
  59. * the implications of artificial life, 
  60. * the role of the computer in society and our daily lives,
  61. * the ontological and ethical issues concerning virtual reality 
  62.   reality including: virtual identities, software agents, and  
  63.   cyberspace entities
  64. * the evidential value of computer generated photoimages
  65. * the claims made about the computer-born and sustained
  66.   disciplines of chaos theory and fractal geometry: so they
  67.   constitute a revolution in science?

  69. III. Deadline for Submissions

  71. Papers should be submitted before December 15, 1992.

  73. IV. Format
  74.  
  75. All papers will be rigorously refereed, and should conform to the
  76. following rules.

  78. * All manuscript submissions should include three versions: two
  79. on disk and one hardcopy:
  80.  a. On disk
  81.    i. a copy of the manuscript in ASCII format
  82.    ii. a copy of the manuscript in the format of your word
  83.        processor 
  84.  b. Hardcopy
  85.    i a copy of the manuscript on paper

  89. * Please provide a short abstract of the paper in a separate file.

  91. * The formatted version of the paper should
