  20. As part of the fall, 1992 program on Symbolic Dynamics, MSRI will host a
  21. five-day workshop from November 2 through 6.  The organizing committee
  22. consists of Mike Boyle (chairman), Jack Wagoner, and Susan Williams.

  24. The workshop is open to the scientific public; there is no registration
  25. fee.  Activities will begin with registration at 9:00 a.m. on Monday,
  26. November 2, 1992 and the first talk at 9:30 a.m.  There will be
  27. refreshments at 10:30 a.m. and tea at 3:15 p.m. The sessions will be in the
  28. Institute Lecture Hall.

  30. The workshop will range broadly over aspects of symbolic dynamics and its
  31. applications.  Topics are expected to include shifts of finite type, more
  32. general subshifts and countable Markov chains, cellular automata, orbit
  33. equivalence, actions by group automorphisms, codings of flows, zeta
  34. functions and the trace formula, Markov partitions and tilings, connections
  35. with language and automata theory, and problems related to efficient data
  36. storage.

  150. There is a shuttle bus running at half-hour intervals between MSRI and the
  151. Mining Circle just to the east of Evans Hall. The first trip uphill is at
  152. 7:45 a.m. and thereafter on the quarter and three-quarters hours until the
  153. last trip at 6:15 p.m. Downhill the trips leave on the hour and half-hour
  154. with the first trip at 8:00 a.m. and the last at 6:30 p.m.  Be sure to take
  155. the  bus labelled "Hill Service"; if in doubt, ask the driver.  There is a
  156. charge of 50 cents and exact change is required.  There is also a bus from
  157. downtown Berkeley (Shattuck and Center) to Evans Hall for which the fare is
  158. 25 cents, with exact change required.

  160. All participants are invited to a wine and cheese reception at 6:00 p.m.
