- Something we used to do in the old UNIX-PC days will probably work quite
- well for the dead 3/50 fans.
-
- Remove the fans from the case (it's not particularly hard) and take them
- down to your local stereo repair shop. Not the place that sends your
- stereo somewhere else; a place that really repairs them on the spot.
-
- They carry fans that have to run very very quietly. They can call the
- manufacturer of the Sun fan and find out how many CFM (cubic feet per
- minute) the fan moves. They can then sell you a fan of the same size
- and shape that moves the same (or more) cfm. The big difference will be
- that the new fan runs off of the AC current rather than DC from the
- Sun power supply. Your choices are to either wire the new fan directly
- to the ac lines by the power supply (not difficult) or plug it directly
- into the wall.
-
- The end result is a quieter and more reliable fan.
