  12. I have an external Sun-supplied Seagate 424Mb SCSI disk (one of the lunchbox
  13. variety - Desktop Storage Pack, something like that).
  14. This is connected to a SPARCstation 1 which has an internal Quantum 105Mb
  15. SCSI drive.

  17. The external disk does not spin up when the system is powered on.  It
  18. doesn't matter in which order I power on the devices.  "probe-scsi"
  19. can see both disks, but for the external disk it doesn't show the
  20. serial number (another sign of not having spun up).

  22. The only way I've found to make it spin up is to boot off the internal
  23. disk (or some other device such as a tape).  When the kernel probes
  24. for devices, the external disk spins up.

  26. This is a nuisance because I want to boot off the external disk.
  27. So I have to first boot from the internal disk, then interrupt it
  28. once the external disk has spun up, then boot the external disk.
  29. Not very automated.

  31. It does it whatever SPARCstation I connect it to.

  33. I have had other Sun disks (including an internal one) sometimes not
  34. spin up until the kernel probe, but the behaviour has not been
  35. consistent except on this one disk.

  37. Has anyone else seen this?  Does anyone have any idea what's causing it?
