- I have an external Sun-supplied Seagate 424Mb SCSI disk (one of the lunchbox
- variety - Desktop Storage Pack, something like that).
- This is connected to a SPARCstation 1 which has an internal Quantum 105Mb
- SCSI drive.
-
- The external disk does not spin up when the system is powered on. It
- doesn't matter in which order I power on the devices. "probe-scsi"
- can see both disks, but for the external disk it doesn't show the
- serial number (another sign of not having spun up).
-
- The only way I've found to make it spin up is to boot off the internal
- disk (or some other device such as a tape). When the kernel probes
- for devices, the external disk spins up.
-
- This is a nuisance because I want to boot off the external disk.
- So I have to first boot from the internal disk, then interrupt it
- once the external disk has spun up, then boot the external disk.
- Not very automated.
-
- It does it whatever SPARCstation I connect it to.
-
- I have had other Sun disks (including an internal one) sometimes not
- spin up until the kernel probe, but the behaviour has not been
- consistent except on this one disk.
-
- Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone have any idea what's causing it?
