- Depends on how heavily you rely on 9 track tapes. Our laboratory archives
- thousands of tapes containing data obtained from nearly 30 years of space
- exploration. We bought our own cleaning machines to clean and re-tension
- tapes regularly. Unfortunately, our machine broke down recently and we were
- forced to replace it (~ $4500), when it looks like we will be moving to other
- media within the next few years.
-
- The cleaning definately makes a difference. I am still able to read tapes
- that were generated in the mid to late 70's easily, except for such minor
- details as XDS or /6 floating point format.
-
- Our only problem is that we still have some of the more basic level data
- sets on 7 track tape. (The more refined products have been moved to 9tk.)
- If anyone knows where I can get a used 7tk drive that I could hook up to
- an old PDP or VAX, I'd be grateful to hear the details, sort of...
