  27.  Depends on how heavily you rely on 9 track tapes. Our laboratory archives
  28. thousands of tapes containing data obtained from nearly 30 years of space
  29. exploration. We bought our own cleaning machines to clean and re-tension
  30. tapes regularly. Unfortunately, our machine broke down recently and we were
  31. forced to replace it (~ $4500), when it looks like we will be moving to other
  32. media within the next few years.

  34.  The cleaning definately makes a difference. I am still able to read tapes
  35. that were generated in the mid to late 70's easily, except for such minor
  36. details as XDS or /6 floating point format.

  38.  Our only problem is that we still have some of the more basic level data
  39. sets on 7 track tape. (The more refined products have been moved to 9tk.)
  40. If anyone knows where I can get a used 7tk drive that I could hook up to
  41. an old PDP or VAX, I'd be grateful to hear the details, sort of...
