- We have DECStations and DEC are bing rather slow about bringing out
- R4000 systems so I am wondering about alternate upgrade paths. I am
- still skeptical about the Alpha since there are still no official
- performance figures. Even if the Alpha is competitive, it doesn't have
- the convenience of binary compatability. If we aren't going to
- preserve binary compatability, it throws the whole thing open.
-
- I believe that the r4000 has hardware support for simultaneously
- running big and little endian user processes. If the software support
- were there to run little endian Ultrix mips binaries on a SGI R4000
- machine, it would be a significant selling point for us I realize it
- is a "non trivial problem" getting all the system calls to work, but
- SGI might just be able to steal a significant share of DEC's market!
-
- The other feature we require is DECnet (not my decision, believe me).
- Any tales about how good or otherwise the DECnet implimentation is on
- SGI machines.
