- The "Laser Printer Support" package is a misnomer, it is really
- TranScript, and really is meant to support only Apple LaserWriter I
- and II printers via the serial port. While the HP LaserJet with an
- additional Apple-compatible PostScript cartridge *may* be compatible
- when hooked up via the serial port, there is a much better solution
- available now.
-
- SGI has recently begun shipping Impressario, which includes explicit
- support for the HP LaserJet IIP, IIP+, IIIP, and III WITHOUT a
- PostScript cartridge. Impressario includes host-based rendering for
- SGI Image, text, and PostScript, and uses the parallel port to
- download simple raster bitmaps to the LaserJet. This means that on a
- 4D/35 your rendering can go a LOT faster for those images and complex
- PS documents, and that you needn't spend $$ on a PS cartridge for the
- LaserJet.
-
- In addition, Impressario printers report detailed status back to the
- end user via a new Printer Status Panel, and a suite of graphical end
- user tools allow each user to customize the settings for their print
- jobs when sent to each Impressario printer. All of these functions
- work across the network, transparently.
-
- I highly recommend Impressario for HP LaserJets connected to any SGI
- machine which has a parallel port. Check it out!
-
