- We have always read news from flat files. Here is our setup:
-
- Machine A: has modem, is our uucp connection to the world
- Machine B: our disk server, news files are stored there
- Machines C thru whatever: nothing special, just on the LAN
-
- Machine A dials out to our provider at regular intervals to upload/download mail
- and news. The news directories on Machine B are mounted via NFS to all
- machines, including Machine A. The news processing software (in our case,
- c-news) believes, of course, that the news directories are local, and runs on
- Machine A and at 1:15am daily to upload and download news (we also upload news,
- and both upload and download mail, every 2 hrs. between 7:45am and 5:45pm). All
- our machines run NewsGrazer with the flat-file option set in preferences, since
- the news directories appear to be local.
-
- This works fine for us. We only have a modem connection to the outside world,
- which we use as sparingly as we are comfortable with (to keep costs down - we're
- a small company). I don't really know anything about nntp, but I can't imagine
- that it could be an improvement for us over what we do now. I could be wrong
- about that; if so, please enlighten me. Note that our overriding concern in
- using our modem is keeping cost to a minimum, since the phone number we call
- when we get/send mail and news is a toll call.
