- Jerry Wilcox says he's going to recommend DD/AD because he has good
- experience with that product. That is, of course, his right, but when
- he says there have been "various notes" from folks who don't think
- Stuffit Deluxe/Stuffit Space Saver is a better product, I have to say
- that my understanding of the facts is different.
-
- I've been using the released product for a few weeks now, and
- have had no problems with SD/SSS. I tried one case where I booted
- from another machine with SD (3.0) but not SSS installed, and it
- expanded the SSS files on the first machine just fine.
-
- Thus I conclude that the one user whose message reported problems
- was using the product improperly--he had SSS files on one machine
- and tried to read them on a second machine which did not have
- SSS or SD (comparable version) installed.
-
- As for complaints, anyone who has been following the history of AD/DD
- will recall many tens of complaints and long threads on Compuserve as
- the product went through one upgrade after another. It has been
- upgraded yet again. This is not necessarily an unmitigated bad
- thing--some say the frequent upgrades show the vendor's responsiveness
- to bug reports. Fair enough. Nevertheless from what I've seen the
- number of bug reports to date (proven or not) about SD/SSS is
- microscopic compared to those of AD/DD in the past, at a comparable
- stage of development.
-
- Bottom line: one can choose either product based on its speed and
- features, since AD/DD's compression efficiency is about the same as
- SD/SSS. If speed is important, I find AD/DD much slower. On the basis
- of features and convenience I find SD/SSS head and shoulders above
- AD/DD. My own choice is SD/SSS, which I recommend unhesitatingly, after
- having used both products.
-
- (More Disk Space is another product I've used, and find inferior in
- breadth and power to SD/SSS. Moreover some object to its
- implementation--it attracted criticism from several Mac "gurus"
- because of its installing a resource in (patching) the System File,
- which some think a big no-no. The programmers have since, I'm told,
- provided an alternative to this. Further, several on Compuserve have
- been near-enraged at what they saw as deliberate evasiveness and
- obfuscation with respect to bug reports. Again, after a lot of
- community pressure, they've moved to get their act together.)
-
- Disclaimer: The compression follies are a very competitive area and
- vendors are constantly improving their products. What is true one
- day may not be true six months later.
