- }Microsoft looks to be dividing into a low-end/high-end strategy
- }with DOS version ? with Windows version ? on the low-end and Windows
- }NT on the high-end. NT looks like it's going to provide the features
- }commonly associated with systems like UNIX, as well as some other
- }things that not many operating systems implement yet. It's still
- }very vauge, though.
- }
- }NT also has very stiff hardware requirements. A good 16 MB of RAM
- }and a 200 MB hard disk looks like a fairly minimal configuration.
- }This won't catch on on the desktop for at least another 2-3 years.
-
- Don't forget that the current estimated suggested retail on Win/NT is a few
- hundred dollars on top of the cost of this minimal configuration. This is
- definitely not going to be a low-end product. Even with site licensing (what
- little that Microsoft offers), it's going to cost a fortune for a company to
- buy copies for everyone, so they'll start with just a few initially. Like
- you say, it'll take a few years to get going.
