- NT is supposed to be a complete operating system (versus the hybrid
- OS/environment of Win 3.1 -- no one can say exactly which it is to
- my satisfaction). With NT, there will be no DOS, except for the
- DOS emulation that NT is supposedly going to provide.
-
- On a disconnected note, DOS 6 is supposedly going to have networking
- built-in. A PC Week issue a couple of weeks ago talked about it.
- It sounds sort of like the early versions of AppleTalk, but since
- I'm fairly new to the Mac world, this may not be entirely correct.
-
- Microsoft looks to be dividing into a low-end/high-end strategy
- with DOS version ? with Windows version ? on the low-end and Windows
- NT on the high-end. NT looks like it's going to provide the features
- commonly associated with systems like UNIX, as well as some other
- things that not many operating systems implement yet. It's still
- very vauge, though.
-
- NT also has very stiff hardware requirements. A good 16 MB of RAM
- and a 200 MB hard disk looks like a fairly minimal configuration.
- This won't catch on on the desktop for at least another 2-3 years.
