- With regards to the System being burned into the ROMS: as I
- understand it, Apple wants to shy away from massive system rewrites
- to incorporate new features, such as Quicktime, and leave them as
- extentions for the user to put in as he wishes. Rewrites will tend
- torwards system debugging and maybe optimatzation, and so
- (hopefully) the Systems being placed in ROM will not require massive
- rewrites, as is now the trend; rather we'd just toss a little TuneUp
- into the Extention Folder when necessary. (Hey, this is just bits
- and pieces I put together from reading MacWeek, MacWorld, MacUser,
- and InfoWorld; I could be very wrong on it).
-
- Now, as for this massive flame war for System 7 verus System 6: I
- think both have their uses, and I figure that although System 7 has
- more features than System 6, that doesn't translate to "better".
- This is the kind of mentality that has befuddled the modern car
- industry: I look for firms statistics, and people point out the
- friggin pull out cup holder! I currently use System 7, mainly
- because people regard me as some kind of "Mac guru" and since they
- have System 7, I use it to be familar with their problems. (I'm
- human, damn it; I have a dead hard drive to prove it!! ;)
-
- But I stalled on getting System 7 for a while, mainly because I
- wanted to wait til the vanishing folder problem was solved; I know
- not many people got the problem, but the only other guy I know who
- has a IIsi had that problem, and he wasted 2 weeks with the service
- reps trying to fix it, and I didn't feel that anxious anyway.
- I guess my point is that I think all these flames regarding the
- system changes are pointless. I had just as many crashes under
- System 6 as with System 7, and about the same success under recovery
- with the almighty MacBugs. I don't think the actual utility of the
- computer would go down if I went back, and I honestly wouldn't
- complain if I was asked to go back. Hell, I think System 6 and
- System 7 each beat out most of the other OSs out there, and I have
- no regrets whatsoever with buying my IIsi.
