- Jeffrey,
-
- the absolute first thing you need to do in order to fix this, assuming
- you are fixing it yourself, is to get Larry Pina's book, "Macintosh Repair
- and Upgrade secrets." ISBN 0-672-48452-8. Hayden is the publisher.
-
- Fixing a Mac+ by yourself is certainly doable; I've done many resolderings
- on my old machine.

- |For ages,
- |the machine has had a horizontal 'flickery line thing' which we have never
- |managed to diagnose.
-
- This is known as the infamous "screen jitters" problem, which is caused
- by a bad T1 (flyback transformer on the power supply board). New transformers
- don't cost too much (like $20 or so).
-
- | Now, in addition to that, the entire screen is losing
- |vertical momentum and is just showing up as a horizontal beam of light.
-
- According to Pina, this can be due to three general things:
- 1) bad solder joint on pin-5 of J4
- 2) bad transistors (Q1 and Q2)
- 3) bad resistors R2 and R3
-
- Again, check out the book for detailed procedures and correct replacements.
- *Every* funny thing I found on my power supply was documented in his
- book -- he knows what he's talking about, indeed.

- Oh, BTW, I fixed my power supply the third time for less than $30, which
- includes two cartridges for my turntable... It's definitely cheap to
- do it yourself.
