- I posted recently about problems with an SE/30 power supply and hard disk.
- If that makes me a "rumor monger", I should probably help clear this up.
-
- Short answer: the SE/30 power supply is robust; any modern drive
- from 5 1/4" HH to the 3 1/2" `low-profile' mechanisms should work.
- A 5 1/4" drive obstructs the PDS slot, so it's better to stick with
- a 3 1/2" mechanism.
-
- Formatted capacity and power requirements don't always correlate.
- In general, the newer and smaller the drive, the less power it uses,
- but it pays to ask the vendor.
-
- In my case, installing a 50 MHz accelerator card and an 200 meg
- Rodime drive led to a variety of problems in hot weather use.
- As it turned out, the Rodime 3 1/2" HH uses about 35 watts,
- a real pig compared to modern low-profile drives. I'm replacing
- it with a Maxtor 7213, which uses about 5 watts.
-
- The Rodime had been mounted upside-down (controller card up) next
- to the accelerator card, which throws off alot of heat. Thinking
- that some problems may have been due to the controller overheating,
- I may lengthen the cables and mount the Maxtor controller-side down.
