- Well, at least there's no smoke.
-
- Here's what I was trying to do. I have a three year old Mac Plus which
- I had put four 1MB simms into about two years ago. I had recently
- purchased a IIci with 5 MB and decided to pull the 1 MB simms from
- the plus and swap them with the 256 KB simms in Bank 1 of the IIci.
- I did this and the IIci is very happy now. But then I changed my
- mind and said, "I'll surprize my parents with the Plus and get them on
- Compuserve and then I can exchange email with them!" So I ordered four more
- 1 MB simms from the Chip Merchant and today upgraded the Plus again. I took
- care to not break anything and to not zap anything with static, etc. All
- the same care I used before and was successful with. So I hooked up the
- plus
- and tried to boot up. The first think I heard was a loud snap and a buzzing
- sound coming from the speaker. The screen ran through a bunch of
- random patterns and then finally settled down to a bunch of sad macs with
- the code 03FFFF. I looked this up in the Mac Bible and
- was given the general info that this is a RAM error. GRRR. "Bad simms", is
- what I thought. So I opened up the Plus and put the 256's back in. I
- rebooted and now I get normal startup sounds, but all the screen shows is
- a happy mac on a small square of desktop surrounded by black screen. The
- computer just sits there.
-
- I looked at the 1 MB simms and noticed that on three of them there are the
- normal 30 contacts on the back of the simm (the side opposite the chips).
- But on the fourth simm, there is a rectangle of what looks like solder
- which brings three of the contacts into...well...contact. Now, I admit I
- know next to nothing about electronics, but this situation would seem to
- preclude the simm from functioning normally. But would this situation be
- enough to fry my computer? Can anyone tell me if the simm managed to damage
- some other part on my motherboard? Can anyone tell me what I ought to do to
- get my computer functioning again. If the chip did fry my computer, is
- there any chance that I can get the Chip Merchant to pay for repairs? Is
- there a cheaper place than an Apple dealer to get repairs done? Comments
- and advice on any or all of my problems (well, just my computer problems)
- are welcome. Thanks in advance.
-
- BTW, I'm planning on getting Larry Pina's book asap, but your help is still
- appreciated.
