-
- Someone asked me to upload the free translator for AFE that
- Microsoft produced. This translator will supposedly convert
- AppleWorks documents to MS Works docs. I don't know if it
- will handle the databse or spreadsheet portions or not. I
- have been informed that this particular translator will only
- handle documents of up to 20k in size (I have not verified

- to check with Microsoft to make sure it was OK to post it.

-
- This version of PICMeUp fixes a couple of very minor bugs
- and adds the capability of dismounting the file's volume. It
- won't be a "best-seller", but has found use in some student
- labs around the world.
-
- PICMeUp is a small utility that reads its STR resources for
- the pathname of a file, gets a PICT and snd from the file, and
- displays the PICT and plays the sound. It can also dismount the
- volume containing the file.
- PICMeUp is used in our student lab. Each time a student
- boots a floppy or hard disk Mac, they get a screenful of message.
- Graphics, text, and sound are used because they just don't read
- the signs on the door...
-
- Included is a Word document for setting it up. If you can't
- read it, send me e-mail and request another format.
-
- PICMeUp is ChocolateWare: If you like it, send me some
- bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate.
- Source code available on request.

- Subject: [*] What happened to TIGER?
-
- Someone sent me mail recently looking for my ShareWare program TIGER, which
- used to be in the info-mac archives. Was its removal deliberate? If it was
- accidental, then here is a resubmittal of the program.
-
- -Robert Lenoil
-
- This file contains a binhexed stuffit archive of TIGER, version 1.1. Version
- 1.1 fixes a bug in processing multiple uuencoded files per source file. It
- also now handles the files created by the CC:Mail and Microsoft Mail gateways
- (the program was originally tested with AppleLink only). TIGER is Shareware.
-
- TIGER can decode uuencoded files (a popular file encoding technique for UNIX
- systems). It also can decode AppleSingle files (a format for storing Macintosh
- files on other computer systems). To use TIGER, simply choose Extract from the
- File menu and select a file to extract enclosures from. Any enclosed files
- will
- be extracted and put in the same folder as the original file. The original
- file
- is not modified.
-
- Uuencoded files should have file type TEXT and AppleSingle files should have
- file type BINA (binary). If extracting from a uuencoded file produces an
- AppleSingle file, the AppleSingle file is automatically decoded to produce the
- final Macintosh file. This feature makes TIGER ideal for retrieving files from
- Internet mail messages created by the Internet gateways for CC:Mail, Microsoft
- Mail, AppleLink, and possibly QuickMail (I haven't tested QuickMail).
-
- Note: Most enclosures on AppleLink are compressed package files, which require
- the AppleLink software in order to be expanded. A future version of TIGER
- might
- do this automatically -- registered TIGER users that have paid the $5
- shareware
- fee will receive substantial discounts on any future commerical version.

- elliot@europa.rs.kp.dlr.
- de thanks to Dispatcher (from Intercon) which acts an SMTP mail router for
- QuickMail. I think the words 'exstatic', 'overjoyed', and 'awestruck' would
- be understatements! This has GOT to the greatest thing since sliced bread (
- and in Germany most bread isn't sliced, so you can see how really advanced
- this is!).
-
- I guess what I really like is it's user-friendliness: people can send me mail
- using a user name of 'elliot', 'bennett', 'elliot.bennett', or
- 'elliot_bennett'
- - Dispatcher doesn't care (so long, that is, as 'elliot' and/or
- 'bennett' are unique to the QuickMail server- which, as I'm not German, it is
- :
- -).
-
- I also REALLY like being able to get info-mac delivered directly to my mac
- instead of having to log on to a Vax in Darmstadt! This was a TRUE pleasure (
- despite the fact that the last few lines were missing in the body of the text
- but the entire Info-Mac was intact in the enclosed file- I think this is a
- QuickMail and/or LISTSERV problem- but I really don't care since it makes my
- info-mac reading so much more enjoyable!).
-
- On the minus side is the fact that the accompanying manual is definitely
- lacking. For a $1200 product I expect more than a thin, cheaply produced and
- bound manual that's poorly organized. I had problems installing the software
- only because the order of the steps I needed to take were not clearly
- deliniated. A slight reorganization would have made things MUCH easier.
- Fortunately, I had access to a couple of TCP gurus who helped me through the
- rough parts. Once it was up and running I was home-free...
-
- So, on the whole, I can STRONGLY recommend this product (especially if you're
- half-way compitent with TCP/IP [which I wasn't]). Should you have any more
- questions, you know where to find me!

- Subject: Handheld scanners (S)
-
- I received four replies to my inquiry about the Typist by Caere and other
- hand-held scanners. All of the replies were very informative. The opinions
- among those who own hand-held scanners are fairly consistent, along the
- following lines:
-
- 1) They're OK for occasional scanning of graphics. It's important to keep
- the page very flat, and to be very careful to scan in a straight line.
- (In other words, it's tedious and time-consuming).
-
- 2) The OCR capability is not really that useful. Even when it works (e.g.
- with relatively large-size fonts), there are typically at least 5% of the
- characters that it can't read; they end up as NULLs that you have to edit
- by hand afterwards. The whole process ends up taking more time than it
- would take an average touch-typist to type it by hand (40 wpm or less on
- an SE/30 by one estimate). To do any really useful OCR, you need a
- flatbed scanner.
-
- 3) The OCR process is painfully slow even on a fairly fast Mac. You wouldn't
- want to do it often on a low-end Mac.
-
- All four respondents had bought a hand scanner but say they wouldn't if
- they were making the choice today; they recommended a flatbed scanner
- instead.

- Subject: Info-Mac CD-ROM response
-
- Dear Info-Mac Enthusiasts,
-
- We have received an overwhelmingly positive response to our proposal
- to produce a CD-ROM of the Info-Mac archive, and we would like to
- thank everyone who sent in suggestions and comments. There are a few
- things that people suggested we mention to the group, so here goes.
-
- A number of people expressed concern that we look carefully through
- the files for copy/distribution restrictions before putting them onto
- a CD-ROM. We are actually going through each file (the abstract and
- the application) to check for any such restriction. We are then
- trying to contact individual authors of such restricted programs to
- get their permission. If we receive a "NO" or no response at all, we
- will leave the program off the CD. (Our general posting to Info-Mac a
- few days ago made it appear that we were going to put everything on
- the CD unless we heard from the author saying not to. This is not the
- case -- the general message was more of a "double check". Sorry for
- not making that clear the first time.)
-
- On the CD we will put a file listing all of the files that are
- included on the CD and all of the files that were left off. (So far,
- it looks like only a small percentage of the files will be left off.)
- We will include all of the digests as well.
-
- A few people were wondering if this CD was to be a one-time shot or an
- ongoing thing. As many pointed out, the Info-Mac archive is changing
- constantly, and it probably makes sense to produce disks periodically.
- If things go well, it would be nice to come out with quarterly disks.
-
- The plan is to have the first CD-ROM out around the end of September.
- For those interested, we'll post more on how to get one as the time
- approaches.
-
- Thanks for all the support!

-
- OK, OK, I give up! I've been trying to figure this one out without asking,
- but have to break down and see if I'm going crazy...
-
- Three times in the last couple of weeks, my powerbook 170 has made a funny
- little noise reminicent of something from a pinball or video game. The
- sound is like one that might accompany something "filling up." The sound
- is accompanied by a small icon in the menubar and to the right of the
- currently active application's icon (you know, the little multifinder-like
- rendering up there that tells you what you're running). This icon looks
- like a little "u" with tiny ledges sticking out from the top and there is a
- little animation of an arrow pointing down into the top of this "cup" as it
- fills and empties with black pixels (geez, this is hard to describe). You
- can't select the icon and get a menu or anything, nor does it seem to be an
- alert for any application I have open. I had the impression that it
- related to times when I had paused in my tying with some key-combination
- down, but can't recreate it. I then thought that it indicated some change
- of state in battery charging, but even with volts installed, I haven't
- detected a pattern. Heck, it happens so infrequently that I don't have
- much to deduce a pattern on. I also have my sound volume set quite low and
- have been working in a very noisy environment, so I may not notice it all
- the times it happens.
-
- If someone can't help me I'm going to have to go get my copy of ResEdit and
- dig around looking for the little menu icon and at least see if it a system
- resource or associated with some program.
-
- For the record, my inits are simple (SAM anti virus, Adobe Type Manager,
- Microsoft Mail, and the Regulator).

- Install two 4 pair 24 gauge unshielded twisted pair cables in a star

- In general, one should scan images at twice the resolution of the line

- resolution, the pixels will be visible in the printed image as little
- square tiles. This is true for line screens up to about 200 lpi; at

- That does happen on the new odd-size screens, Gregg. White Knight is the
- same way, expecting either a 9-inch or a 13-inch screen. Both it and
- SoftPC lose screen on the Apple 12" Color monitor and on those PB types

-
- I use SoftPC on my SE/30 and it has the same behavior. Greg's tirade,
- however, is completely out of line. The zoombox behavior is intentional,
- documented, and IMO perfectly reasonable. The two window sizes are fixed
- by Insignia's commendable desire to allow running SoftPC on Macs with
- compact screens. The reduced size screen is achieved by a proportional
- reduction of the screen image which can do funky things to some displays
- due to aliasing (i.e., jaggies) but generally looks fine. The larger
- display size is pixel-for-pixel, and looks terrific, but won't fit on a
- compact screen. The window can't be randomly resized since supporting
- something so unPC would be a complete nightmare and incompatible with
- almost any PC software anyway. Insignia could easily have saved themselves
- much trouble by requiring a large screen Mac and said to h--l with everyone
- else! They didn't.
-
- Summary: It's not a bug, it's (really) a feature. The behavior of the
- zoombox is straight out of the Human Interface Guidlines: toggles between
- small and large screen. If you mouse it by accident, clicking again
- restores the small screen. No sweat.
-
- I'm not associated with Insignia except as a customer. My regard for their
- product, however, is immense. The challenge must have been unbelievable:
- producing a package with the complete emmulation they provide for virtually
- every quirky nuance of the PC, and having it come out as close to
- bulletproof as any software I've ever seen. Plus, it runs reasonably
- quickly :-)
-
- So, Greg, your "bug" is just a demand that Insignia let you place 10 pounds
- of (pick your substance) in a 5 pound sack.

- my mac in the office is on ethernet 7 i am able to telnet/ftp
- anywhere. however, when i dial in to it using ARA from my home
- machine, i am unable to get a telnet session even to my local
- UNIX host.
-
- i am using unique IP addresses in both my office mac and my mac at home.
- i am able to do any macintosh network function from home (attach to
- servers, print to office printers, & use office 3270 gateways) as if
- i were sitting at my desk (just slower).
-
- i use Intercon TCP/Connect II for my telnet sessions. when i try
- and establish a telnet session to my local host, TCP/Connect takes
- a long time (several minutes) to inform me that my host is not reachable.
-
- for the shiva netmodem---i have one setup on a localtalk zone in my office.
- when i dial in from home, every Macintosh related network activity
- is working fine (attach, print, & 3270 gateway). however, TCP/Connect
- cannot successfully launch. i get an error message that says i have a IP numb
- number conflict. this may not be true. this error message seems
- more universal than specific.
-
- any clues would be most appreciated........

- Subject: Technical Support Nrewsgroup...
-
- Recently, someone (adam?) asked about starting a discussion group/newsgroup
- for technical type support people. The question was raised regarding using a
- LISTSERV as opposed to usenet, and various points thereto..
-
- My two cents:
-
- There have been some similar lists on LISTSERVs that have attempted sort of
- like what you have in mind, though they werent limited to Techies (ADVISE-L
- and
- one I can't remember come to mind) - these never really did all that well..
-
- Also, since the majority of corporate tech support (apple, microsoft, et. al.)
- is on the internet, we'd probably be able to get a wider population to join.
- I hesitate against using a LISTSERV, because as a former list-owner, I know
- just how much LISTSERV and some gateways LOVE internet addressing...
-
- Therefore, I'd have to recommend using a Usenet group, although this has a few
- negatives of its own. 1> You need to go through whatever process there is in
- order to establish a new group (isn't there some kind of voting thing?), and
- 2> you have to worry about who would be posting. Based on that, I'd like to
- offer the following as a proposal, and if there is enough interest, someone
- can start the appropriate ball rolling...
-
- Proposal for the establishment of newsgroup Comp.Misc.Tech-Support
-
- Synopsis: CMT is expected to provide a forum wherein technical support
- representatives for various firms will have an outlet to discuss (among other
- topics) compatibility issues, new system environments, and customer service.
-
- In addition, the forum would provide for the quick wide spread release of
- various bug fixes and product technical updates.
-
- Specifics: This would be a moderated list, to avoid excessive posting of
- irrelevant topics. Topics allowed would include: the above mentioned, in
- addition to bug reports on various products. (Yes, I would volunteer to
- moderate.)
-
-
- There's my 2 cents... Comments?

- Subject: TI MicroLaser Turbo Good?
-
- I'm considering buying a TI MicroLaser Turbo printer. I've read the
- September 1992 MacUser Lab's report.
-
- My criteria:
-
- Very fast
- Company not likely to go out of business soon
- Good price
-
- Prices seem to be in the $1900-$2000 range. I've seen the 1 Meg
- upgrade for about $59.
-
- I'd like to hear any comments anyone has about this printer, printers
- >From TI, why I'm making a big mistake, etc.
-
- Thanks,

- Subject: UU-Cat 1.0
-
- Hello netlanders,
-
- I've been trying to use UU-Cat 1.0 to concatonate multiple part uu-encoded
- files (on a ci/7.0.1-tuned/32 bit addressing on/many extensions), it worked
- twice (after many tries) but I cannot get it to work consistently.
-
- I also use UU-Lite to uu-decode the multipart files once I get them
- concatonated (it doesn't work by draging multiple files onto the UU-Lite
- icon).
-
- Can anyone suggest a better method of concatonating files? Currently I use
- MacSink to do the usual cut and paste (manually strip the unnecessary stuff
- >From the files), but that can be somewhat tedious on multipart files.
-
- BTW, I connect to a Unix based system, and I know that I can concatonate
- files on the Unix, but it doesn't strip the non-uu-encoded junk from the
- files, so that either must be done by opening each part with an editor on
- unix, or using some unix program to do this for me (I am not aware of any
- unix program which will strip the non-uu-encoded junk from files and then
- concatonate).
-
- Suggestions and comments appreciated.

- It sounds lie a bug indeed and the person who answerred should have given a
- more polite and caring answer. Insignia should be more careful, to say the
- least, in who they hire. I symapathize with your situation having
- had similar experience with other companies and respect the high standard of
- support it sounds like you give your users.
-
- At the same time, I don't agree with your
- out and out condemnation of an entire company based on one interaction.
- Nor do I think your views of the firm can be supported based on this
- one experience. I've gotten better service from other vendors than
- >From Insiginia (I give them a 4 out of 5) but overall I think
- their product is rather remarkable, despite the Zoom bug. (I use SoftAT,
- Access PC and SoftNode, as well as the old version of Soft PC.) I think
- it's wrong to discourage people from using it just because of this
- one bug and interaction.
-
- At the moment I do not have a solution for the bug, but I will post
- any solutions I come up with. Thank you for bringing it to the rest of our
- attention. Good luck.
