  33. RESOLUTION (WELL SORT OF):

  35.     This is my third post on this subject. Due to some helpful 
  36. suggestions, I ran the ATI video driver install program and used the 
  37. "custom" driver instead of the "crystal scan 1572fs" driver.  As soon 
  38. as I brought "custom" up at 1024x768 @72Hz the problem was obvious.
  39. The "custom" configuration provides a rectangular box around the perimeter 
  40. of the screen, to facilitate centering.  This box was folded over on the 
  41. left side of the screen exactly where the vertical bar appears.

  44.  Methods of solution:
  45.  1. under "custom" 1024x768 @72Hz - adjust the displayed box (with the 
  46.     commands given on the screen) to be centered.
  47.  2. under "custom" 1024x768 use less than 72Hz - the problem did not appear
  48.     at all at 60Hz.
  49.     NOTE: This explains why some monitors do not have the problem.  I.E.
  50.     my friends NEC 3fgx only runs at 60Hz.  It also uses a different driver
  51.     though.

  53.  Notes:
  54.  1. I talked to an ATI tech and he believes the problem is gateways 
  55.     version of the ATI bios, or their "crystal scan 1572fs" ATI driver.
  56.  2. Gateway didn't seem interested in solving the bios or driver
  57.     problem.  Basically they said, if the "custom" driver works than
  58.     the problem is solved.  I guess it is.
  59.  3. At this point I am going to keep the second Crystal scan 1572fs 
  60.     monitor, and hope that it is going to be reliable.  The first one 
  61.     had occasional screen flashes.
