- I recently evaluated 486DX machines for use as a Novell file server. I
- chose the Northgate 486/33e EISA Elegance tower, with 32mb RAM and a mirrored
- pair of 1.6GB SCSI drives. Unless your use will be similar, however, the
- stronger points of the Northgate (like Novell OEM-level tech support) may
- not apply to you. Northgate, the company, is in financial trouble, which
- may be a bigger factor to you as an individual buyer. I think it was this
- spring that PC Magazine picked the Northgate as an Editors' Choice for a
- file server. Again, that may not apply to you. Personally, I like Northgate.
- I was a little surprised when the system arrived without rubber feet or
- "trestles", although it came with mounting screws for the latter. Also the
- control cover on the Panasonic monitor was missing. Not broken, _missing_.
- Those are not good signs, if QA ia beginning to slip like that. My reasons
- for choosing Northgate were more technical in nature (also price/performance
- related), so I stand by my decision; these concerns are probably more (or
- perhaps "differently") meaningful to you. There's always that great keyboard.
- Some people here at work, however, swear by Dell. Compaq is still a little
- pricey in that configuration, despite their impressive recent cuts.
- Swan has gotten consistently excellent ratings in reviews for service and
- support among mail order companies. Zeos and Gateway also do very well in
- general, however I have heard (some on the net) of specific cases of
- infuriating problems, particularly with Gateway.
-
- If I were personally buying a system today from one of those vendors, I'd
- probably most seriously consider Swan for everything but the keyboard, which
- I'd get from Northgate. You did say a 33MHz machine; Swan's 50 was a DX-2,
- which I ruled out for the file server, but their 33 should be fine, and at
- a reasonable cost.
