  11. Sorry, I've just gotta throw my $0.02 in.  I just bought a 50 Mhz 486 OS/2
  12. machine and feel I'm qualified to comment.  I'm lucky enough to live in San
  13. Diego, turns out I can buy a system locally for much less than the mail
  14. order price.  The prices in all the ads I checked vary wildly, closer 
  15. inspection reveals they all have wildly different configurations.  After
  16. pricing the components of my system everybody was around $3300 +/- $100.

  18. So that leaves us with "what vendor do you go with?"  Well, I was down to
  19. 3.  After asking around one had a terrible reputation (they're the biggest
  20. in town...).  On the second one (OEI computers) my sales guy had mondays
  21. off and his replacement didn't have a copy of my quote.  I faxed it to him
  22. and he said "Oh, thats wrong.  Total price is around $3900."  Guy made a
  23. mistake somewhere but I didn't want to wait another day.  My company buys
  24. from the third company and I heard nothing but good things about them,
  25. they got the business.  This is Micro City.

  27. As for slimey ads, most of them are.  So are TV commercials.  They lie.
  28. They distort.  They mislead.  It standard operating procedure.  Live with
  29. it and learn to use your brain to figure out what exactly they're selling
  30. and what it will cost to get what you want.

  32. Companies I didn't even bother getting quotes from?  Those would be the
  33. ones who advertised 'math processor and 8k cache included!'.  I don't stoop
  34. that low.
