- (Ok, I'm desperate. Foolishly I took a plunge with insufficient knowledge.
-
- I recently purchased from the net a used hard drive with controller card,
- which I had hoped to add to my 386 system. I had naively thought that with
- separate controller cards the bus would magically sort out which card was
- talking to which hard drive. (If it could distinguish what each of the other
- cards -- video, serial, modem -- was feeding it, it seemed
- plausible that it would be able to talk to each controller card without
- trouble.) Of course, it hasn't worked that way, and plugging in both cards
- at once leads to trouble, where the best I have managed to accomplish is the
- system talking to one drive while ignoring the other.
-
- My system came with a fair amount of documentation for most everything but the
- existing controller card and drive. Also, the 2nd drive I purchased came
- with documentation (as advertised) only for the controller card. I am working
- on trying to get information on the original drive from the company that sold
- me my system, but don't know if they will be able/willing to provide it.
-
- Both drives work perfectly when the other is unattached, so I think I can
- trust the BIOS settings, and the choices of address selection on the control-
- ler cards (as well as the person who sold me the drive).
-
- Answers to the following questions would be greatly appreciated:
-
- 1) Is it even possible to mate an IDE drive with an MFM drive, providing
- they each have their own controller card, or is this just bad sex? (I
- have heard different opinions on this one. The controller cards are, of
- course, of the corresponding MFM/IDE type.)
-
- 2) Is it merely a matter of somehow setting the interrupts each drive uses,
- providing the BIOS and address setting are correct? Could it be as simple
- as getting a ribbon cable with with a twist in it?
-
- 3) Can anyone provide me with details about the jumpers on my drives? The
- models are
-
- Seagate ST-251 (~42 M, MFM), which has 7 un-labeled jumpers)
-
- Western Digital 93044 (~42 M, IDE), which has 3 jumpers, '2, 4, 6'.)
-
- 4) Should I give it up and just sell the drives for cash to buy one big one?
-
- 5) Since this is not strictly a 'forsale' item, where else should this be
- posted?
-
- Much thanks in advance for any help provided.
