- Actually, it's the Virgin River Gorge. :) Now if they could just put
- some windsurfers on Lake Mead...
-
- All the Red Flag stuff does bring up a story:
-
- On the west side of Las Vegas is a state park called Red Rock (great rock
- climbing place), that is made of sandstone, and has large butresses
- separated by inset canyons (each ~.25-.5 wide). A couple of friends and
- I we're hiking on the top of one of these butresses and were skirting
- some sandstone when we heard a rumble starting to build. A few seconds
- later it died it out. This happened a few more times, with the rumble
- getting louder and lasting longer. We were looking north trying to see
- what was causing this, when suddenly the roar blasted us from the
- *south.* We quickly turned around and saw to A-10's doing nap-of-earth
- flying at about 50-60' off the deck. Because of our height and they were
- almost directly level with us---you could see the pilot's helmets and
- almost into the cockpits as they did a roll back into the canyon to the
- north. We watched them navigate the canyon and the next butress to
- north, then my one friend thought he saw them head west over the mountain
- range (Potasi/Charleston).
-
- This happened during a red flag exercise, and another friend who works at
- Nellis said they were probably 'lost' and took a joy ride into the
- canyon. After seeing two A-10's up close and personal like that, I would
- *not* want to be in a tank or infantry unit that had to face a warthog.
