- On an HP9000/827 running HP-UX 8.07:
-
- I've been playing with ppl and trying to get it to hook up with a client
- of ours. Since (according to the manual) the login script syntax is
- "identical to the UUCP Systems file", I copied it from there.
-
- When uucp'ing to the remote site, all is well. The chat script works
- past an Equinox data switch to get to the "login:" prompt and all works
- fine. In ppl, however, the remote modem picks up, we wait a few seconds,
- and send a carriage return to wake up the data switch, just like uucp,
- but the data switch never responds with it's "Password:" prompt. I'll
- sit and watch the modem, and sure enough the send light is pumping out
- the returns, but nothing comes back.
-
- I've tried sending multiple carriage returns. I've used the
- "expect-RetryString-expect" to no avail (the RetryString is sent, but
- still just a blank stare from the data switch). I've tried Even, Odd
- and No parity.
-
- I've come to an impass.
-
- If anyone's got an idea, I'm all ears. E-mail your thoughts, ideas,
- or flames, and I'll post a summary (of the suggestions that work :-).
- Thanks. (Ummm, just kidding about the flames.)
-
- Oh, while I'm on the subject, the example "command name" to run on the
- remote system to initiate SLIP is (quoting the ppl.remotes(4) manual
- entry) is "ppl\shewlett running" (the \s is for a space). "hewlett" is
- the name of the system that called in, which, I imagine, I would replace
- with our system name. But what this "running" parameter? ppl(1) give
- no clues. Typo or semi-undocumented feature?
-
- Sincerely,
-
- Angst in Atlanta
