  13. I have experienced this weird problem with our HP 9000/720 that I can neither
  14. explain nor solve:

  16. We have a 9000/720 which is mounting a shared partition, via NFS, from
  17. another 720. The problem is all users who have home directories on this
  18. NFS partition cannot login to HP VUE, neither from console nor from a 700/RX
  19. X terminal. However, the No-Window mode login, as well as rlogin and telnet,
  20. all work fine. Accounts which are on the local disk do not have this problem.

  22. I tried starting X11R4 instead of HP VUE and see if it works. Aftering
  23. logging on console using no-window login, I fired up x11start. The root
  24. window came up okay, and I could open xclock, etc., but when I tried to 
  25. open a new window, an hpterm started up with a blank window, stayed there
  26. for 2 seconds, and exited automatically.

  28. I traced the processes using lastcomm and found that with HP VUE, after
  29. it passed vuegreet, it tried to execute something using csh and then
  30. it will run Xreset and terminate the session automatically.

  32. Does anyone know what is wrong? It looked like during the startup of VUE,
  33. some commands need to be executed by root, but root on the local machine
  34. doesn't have superuser access on an NFS partition and therefore it's failing.
  35. Any help or comment will be greatly appreciated.
