  10. I am trying to dial up to my account at work from home.

  12. At home I am using an Atari 800 with an SX212 modem 
  13. running SX Express software.

  15. At work I have a Unix account running on Sun hardware.  At work I telnet to the 
  16. Sun from a Macintosh IIsi.  The Unix account is set for a vt100 terminal. My 
  17. Sysop tells me that Unix supports lots of different terminals, but since he has 
  18. no Atari experience, he does not know what to specify.

  20. When I dial up and try to work in ELM, the mail handler we use, I get lots of 
  21. extra characters, stuff like:

  23. [?1l>[?1h=
  24. [K

  26. When I try to display the elm menu, the blank lines all have 
  27. [K at the left side of the screen.

  29. Here is what my Sysop tells me about this:

  31. >These characters are all sequences of ANSI command sequences that are
  32. >supposed to perform various functions on the terminal.  For example,
  33. >ESC[2J will erase a screen, ESC[K will erase a line, etc.  (The ESC
  34. >stands for the escape character, decimal 27)

  37. >since it is displaying instead of interpreting them as commands, it is even
  38. >dumber than a vt100 type terminal.

  40. So, does Unix support a terminal this dumb?  
  41. What do I tell Unix to do with TERM?  
  42. Or do I have to do something at the Atari end?
