- You are correct about the XF551 being incompatible with some Atari
- software. The old 810 & 1050 drives spun at a non-standard speed (288RPM?)
- and the XF551 ran at a standard 300RPM (i.e., any off the shelf half height
- 360K drive will run with the XF551). Some software used the rotational
- speed as part of their copy protection - including SubLogic's FS2.
- I talked with the folks at SubLogic, and because Atari changed the drive
- speed, they discontinued the disk version of FS2 for the Atari. I then
- bitched at Atari and they sent me gratis a cartridge copy of FS2 which was
- normally only available bundled with the XE Game System.
- The faster rotational speed is also why the XF551 is slightly faster with
- DOS 2.x and MYDOS.
