- MFS was the original Macintosh File System, used in all Macs prior to
- the release of the Mac Plus. MFS is significantly different from HFS
- (Hierarchical File System) but current Mac system software supports
- both systems.
-
- On a Mac, if you format a 400k floppy disk, you will get an MFS disk
- by default. I believe you can force the system to create a 400k HFS
- disk by holding down the option key at some point. The same may apply
- when formatting 800k disks (opposite order: the default is HFS).

-
- MFS is very different to HFS. The main difference is that MFS doesn't
- support directories (at least, not REAL ones: you can set up folders
- in Finder, but all of the files are stored in the root directory).
- It's disk space allocation is based around a file allocation table
- (similar to MS-DOS) rather than the bitmap/extent system used by HFS.
-
- In short, there are so many differences, it would basically be a
- totally new FST. Since MFS disks are uncommon, there wouldn't be much
- point in Apple wasting its time writing an MFS FST, when it has much
- more important things to do.
