- GCC stands for 'GNU C Compilter' and is a program, not an organization.
-
- GNU stands for 'GNU is Not Unix', and is a recursively defined name. (Much
- of what the origional GNU work related to was LISP based, a language that
- thrives on recursion). It is an organization that writes software that is
- then made freely available under a licence commonly refered to as the
- 'GNU public licence'.
-
- A related organization, the Free Software Foundation is a group of
- authors (Many of which are involved in the GNU project) that have a very
- 'Liberated' attitude towards software development. One of the main
- concepts is that they believe that while developers should make money,
- that it should be the 'Problem Solving' aspects of development that are
- sold and *NOT* some 'program'. The 'GNU Public Licence' is a licence that
- requires that full souce code be released for the program, and also that
- any 'Derivative works' from those sources *MUST* also carry the exact
- same licence (IE: All sources for the derivative package must be released).

-
- One company (Cygnus) that deals exclusively with GNU software makes their
- money as 'problem solvers' and software customizers. A customer can come to
- them and say " I need a system that does this" and they are able to fairly
- in-expensively provide that solution for their customers. It is a very
- productive way to deal with software development that just hasn't caught on
- due to 'fears' that pirates instill into any developer that they won't be
- able to make money unless they somhow limit what a user is able to do with
- the software.
-
- The Amiga community is not used to a source released style of development
- yet, and most 'Copyleft' authors on the Amiga do not yet make much money
- this way. I myself strongly hope that this will change in the future, allowing
- Amiga developers to be more productive (Lessen the standard "We all invented
- the Wheel" problem that happens all too much in the software industry).
-
- BTW: The Amiga based networking software that I am involved in myself is
- released under the GNU public licence.
-
- If you want more information, please just ask.
