- ECS chips are only 16-bit, am I right? Also, most of the
- stuff you can get for Amigas these days is pretty much compatible
- with everything else, seeing that all Amigas with the exception of
- the 3000(T)are nearly identical in terms of architecture. If these
- fabled new chips use a 32 bit data bus, then there has been a design
- introduced that will be largely incompatible. I won't speak for
- Commodore's marketing (not nicely anyway) but their engineers have
- probably considered every possibility...and, with that in mind, have
- most likely come up with a solution for upgrades to older
- machines...possibly a "crippled" chip set that would only address
- some of the lower bandwidth modes. If anyone has read that "illegal"
- posting of V39, they'd know that the low and medium res 8 bit modes
- are 1X bandwidth, which would probably be doable on a 16 bit data
- path. However, everything else requires a bit more muscle. That doc
- did say that all display modes would not be available on all
- machines...and since it hardly makes sense for Commodore to cripple
- their own new chipset design in a new machine, they may be referring
- to the possibility of compatibility with older models. The 3000
- hopefully will be fully upgradeable.
- As for "users that people love to hate", that may be only
- partially true. I've noticed that the Amiga attracts a lot of
- creative art-types who are studied in the art of non-conformity.
- It's just as well. Such a interesting platform should attract
- equally interesting people, IMHO. Keeps things fun.
