- I've successfully used kermit to download a file from an FTP site to my
- campus's mainframe and finally to my amiga. I used the shareware program
- HandshakeV2.0c, which I got from a BBS here in Maine. I'd say it's available
- at an FTP site, but alsa this obviously won't help you.
-
- See if you can get a copy from a local user-group, BBS, or Genie or Compuserve.
-
- Anyways, HandshakeV2.0c seems to handle Kermit as well as could be expected.
- I am not slighting Handshake, but I am slighting Kermit as it too 1.5 hours to
- transfer a 200K program using a 2400 baud modem!!!!!!! This is really not
- acceptable, but if you have to here are the necessary steps that worked for me.
-
- FYI, HandshakeV2.0c supports Kermit 7-bit, Kermit 8-bit, and Kermit text.
- If you're downloading a text file just choose Kermit text and you're all set (
- Handshake will change to 7 or 8 bit using Kermit text, so don't worry about the
- bit). Now, here's the rub: downloading a program from an FTP site. First
- you must type 'TYPE I' at the FTP site. Next, get the file to your mainframe.
- Then type Kermit. Now, when you're in kermit you must also set the file type
- to binary (that's what TYPE I does at an FTP site) by typing 'SET TYPE BINARY'.
- Then type 'SEND OLDFILENAME.Blah.DISK'. Now Kermit will tell you to start
- your kermit download. I have to use 7-bit Kermit, even though I'm
- communicating with the mainframe at 8-bit, no parity, 1. Go figure.
-
- Well, I hope this helps you if you ever get HandshakeV2.0c. I don't know of
- anything else that is as easy to use (and besides figuring out how you're
- mainframe is configured it is very simple. Good luck.
